A zine on the ethics of trying for children in today’s day and age

image

For the past many years, I (and I know many others) have been wrestling with the ethics of choosing to try for children in a time where:

  1. many of us, for the first time in human history, actually have a choice given changing gender norms and the increased availability of birth control (~64% women of birthing age now use some form of contraception, as opposed to 39% fifty years ago) and
  2. the existential threats - both the ones already present and the ones looming imminently - make it very difficult to predict whether we will be bringing a child into a world that is better / the same / significantly worse than the ones we grew up in.

^This is an oversimplification, of course, but you get the gist.

And what better way to elucidate a topic that continuously confounds you than to make a zine about it with friends?

Friends and I are putting together this zine as of Aug 2025 and aim to publish it in Oct 2025 - if you see this in that timeframe, and would like to contribute, please say hi!

(Note that the zine is focused on women-identifying voices for the actual submissions, but other roles like design, distribution, copy-editing are open to all)
